Air Traffic Controller

Airline Air Traffic Controller Job Description & Salary Information

With more and more qualified air traffic controllers retiring every day, the need for new entrants into the field is as pressing as ever. A career as an air traffic control specialist is one of the best opportunities for motivated workers looking to get into the domain of aviation.

Job Duties
Air traffic controllers are government employees working for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Their main responsibility is to monitor air traffic, coordinate with pilots and other controllers, and use all of the information at their disposal to ensure the safety of the flights under their control. Controllers must use integrated computer systems to allow them visual access to the skies. They are the eyes and ears of pilots in the clouds and must give them accurate information in order to keep everyone involved safe and secure.

Job Qualifications
In most cases, air traffic controllers will have a four year college degree. However, different types of experience and testing can be substituted for a college degree. In some cases, relevant military service is also helpful to an aspiring air traffic controller. After gaining the proper education and experience, candidates must pass an aptitude test to gain entrance into a rigorous, FAA-regulated training program offered at various educational institutions around the country. Hopeful air traffic controllers must be able to concentrate for long periods of time, stay alert, and communicate clearly and calmly. Experience with computers and other electronics is an advantage as technology is an essential part of a controller’s job. Organization is also highly important as control specialists must locate and deal with countless planes in several control areas while communicating with a number of other personnel.

Salary & Compensation
The starting salary for an air traffic controller generally ranges from $40,000 to $50,000 a year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, air traffic controllers earn approximately $109,000 per year. Pay rates may vary by airline, location, and level of work experience. In addition to pay, air traffic controllers may receive attractive work benefits packages. A benefits package for an air traffic controller generally consists of a 401(k) retirement plan, healthcare coverage, and paid time off. In many cases, air traffic controllers qualify to receive early retirement.
