Job Duties
The duties of an airline food service employee are very similar to those of a restaurant employee. In fact, there are several different kinds of food service employees who work for an airline just like there are at restaurants. These workers prepare the food as well as the silverware and dishes for outgoing flights, wash dishes from incoming flights, and ensure that kitchen operations run smoothly and efficiently. Food service employees prepare meals for flights, but the entirety of their work takes place on the ground in an airport flight kitchen. Jobs in this field can be found with airlines themselves or with catering companies contracted to work by the airlines.

Job Qualifications
A high school diploma is normally the only requirement for working an entry-level food preparation job for an airline, but workers may be required to have health certifications. Undoubtedly, previous food service experience is a plus. Clean working habits and an ability to work on one’s feet for long periods of time are also great assets to food service employees. Airlines and catering companies usually provide on the job training for new employees. For those who excel as food service workers, there is great opportunity for advancement to chef or one of the administrative positions supervising the flight kitchen.

Salary & Compensation
A food service worker hired by an airline generally starts out earning pay between $8 and $12 per hour. Some food service workers may earn up to $18.00 an hour, or a yearly salary of around $36,000. In addition to base salary, food service workers may earn several job perks. Airlines often offer employee benefits, like free meals and travel discounts.
