Job Duties
Fueling an aircraft is an essential job in the airline industry. The duties of this job include filling a large truck and delivering fuel to the aircraft as well as fueling the plane in a timely manner to keep the airport running on schedule. The job requires a fair amount of standing and lifting up to 20 of the truck’s hose’s 60 lbs onto a ladder to couple it to the aircraft. It may also be necessary to climb onto the plane’s wings to reach the fuel system. The job may also involve hauling equipment for cleaning the aircraft or materials for the craft’s air conditioning system and assisting with ramp and lavatory services with the plane. On average, there will be about 15 fuels per day, which involve climbing in and out of the truck and up ladders. The work for this job is shift based and the worker will be required to wear a uniform at all times and observe strict safety protocols.
Job Qualifications
When applying for this position, bear in mind that candidates must be 18 years of age or older, have a high school diploma, a commercial driver’s license (CDL), and a clean driving record. Good driving skills are a must because the airline fueler will be responsible for delivering fuel to the plane in hazardous weather conditions. The driver may need to avoid other fuel spills such as gasoline and kerosene. On the job training is provided, though prior experience would be helpful.
Salary & Compensation
Average wages for an aircraft fueler range from $9.00 to $12.00 per hour. An experienced aircraft fueler may earn hourly pay of over $18.00. In addition to base salary, airline fuelers may receive work benefits, including 401(k) retirement plans and medical coverage. Pay rates and work benefits vary by location, employer, and work experience.
