Airline Informational Representative Job Description & Salary Information
Job Duties
While the title of the position changes from airline to airline, this job is generally referred to as an airline or airport informational representative, special assistant coordinator, ground attendant, or station attendant. Responsibilities of this staff member include providing assistance to passengers in the terminal and providing answers to their questions concerning directions, fares, baggage, terminal services, medical services, and wheelchair access. These employees are highly visible to the public and regularly field customer complaints. Additionally, some representatives serve solely as translators, aiding and assisting foreign travelers. Employee appearance and uniforms must conform to the standards of the specific airline, so maintaining the desired level of professionalism is another duty of representative.
Job Qualifications
Like other airport jobs, desirable candidates will have excellent communication skills and a professional demeanor. Generally, a high school diploma is required and the ability to communicate in multiple languages is preferred, especially at international airports. There is no industry standard, but most airlines require that attendants be at least 18 years of age. The job is also heavily dependent on the ability to stand or walk for long periods of time, so there are some basic physical qualifications that must be met. Previous training is not required, but could be an advantage. Most airlines provide basic job training to new employees.
Salary & Compensation
The average starting wage for an airline informational representative rests between $12.00 and $20.00 per hour. Informational representatives may also earn work benefits, such as 401(k) retirement plans, medical care, and insurance coverage. Pay rates and employee benefits vary by location, employer, and work experience.
