Airport Skycap Job Description & Salary Information
Job Duties
A skycap stands in front of airports and at airline entrances to offer assistance to passengers. They may help passengers with luggage and answer questions about the location of a terminal or ticket office as well as provide information about the flight schedule of their particular airline. Skycaps can also be required to check or carry luggage from the curb, flag down taxis, or perform other services for customers. A skycap must assist elderly or disabled passengers. They may also be responsible for cleaning terminal floors, windows, and counters. Work schedules are flexible and may include holiday hours. The sky cap may need to lift up to 100 lbs at a time.
Job Qualifications
Although many qualifications for skycaps depend on individual airlines, skycaps are an entry level position and usually only require a high school degree; however, interpersonal and customer service skills are necessary for performing this job effectively and getting sizeable tips. Many airlines require the applicant to be at least 18 years old and posses two years of customer service experience.
Salary & Compensation
Starting pay for an airline skycap job rests between minimum wage and $10.00 an hour. On average, an airline skycap earns between $10.00 and $12.00 per hour. Skycaps may also receive cash tips. On a monthly basis, the salary for an airline skycap ranges from $1,400 to $2,700. Pay rates for a skycap vary by location, employer, and experience level. Eligible airport skycaps receive job perks, like healthcare coverage and travel discounts.
