Airport Truck Driver Job Description & Salary Information

Job Duties
Without an airport truck driver, nothing could reach the plane. The job involves driving a variety of machinery necessary to load and service the plane with fuel, fluids, tools, food, and baggage. It may be necessary to operate scissor lifts or simply drive luggage carts to the aircrafts. The vehicles that you may need to drive include food trucks, ramp stands, employee buses, cleaning equipment, and other vehicles. Depending on the airport, this job may or may not be separate from the job of airline fueler. Indeed, if it is, interested applicants should look into that job as well.

Job Qualifications
This job’s qualifications are very similar to the job of an airline fueler. A high school diploma and a clean driving record are key to securing this position. Depending on the type of vehicles driven, a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) may be necessary. During work, the driver will have to deal with all kinds of driving conditions and potentially spills, as well as dealing with loud and consistent engine noise. It is more than likely that an applicant will need to complete a thorough background check and may be required to get a security clearance similar to other tarmac workers in compliance with TSA regulations.

Salary & Compensation
The starting salary for an airport truck driver is very similar to other ramp jobs. Typically, starting pay for an airport truck driver rests between $8.00 and $10.00 per hour. Experienced airport truck drivers may earn over $18.00 an hour. On average, an airport truck driver earns about $15.00 an hour. Pay rates may vary depending on location and airport of employment. Eligible airport truck drivers also receive employee benefits, ranging from healthcare coverage to 401(k) retirement plans.
