Job Duties
The five major areas in engineering & hull for the Coast Guard are damage controlman, electrician’s mate, electronics technician, machinery technician, and information systems technician. Each of these jobs performs a support role for the Coast Guard, but they vary in work experience and job duties. Typically, each job has some form of technical repair, installation, and maintenance capacity in addition to any other support they may need to provide. Of course, new workers will need to be able to work well with computers and electrical or mechanical systems as well as take orders from their superior officers.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
As with anywhere else in the military, there are a couple of qualifications standard for every branch. You must be between 17 and 27, have a high school diploma, and be a US citizen or resident alien. Additionally, you must take the ASVAB and score at least a 45 or higher to join the Coast Guard, but more specific requirements are necessary for those looking to work in a technical job. Finally, you will need to pass basic training and any additional schooling required by the military, although it will be provided to you free of charge.
