Job Duties
Unlike many other branches and divisions in the military, this is one of the few divisions that actually has solid job duties and isn’t an umbrella term. Some of the responsibilities for this job include working as an investigator, providing support to Coast Guard law enforcement, working on gathering intelligence, and more. You will also be expected to use any means at your disposal to conduct criminal and personal background checks, analyze intelligence, and provide protection to other members of the Coast Guard officials and other VIPs. Each and every one of these investigators will be responsible for coordinating with law enforcement officials to capture and prosecute criminals with the best possible evidence.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Before you even consider the Coast Guard, you have to know what it takes to be an investigator. The job requires excellent communication, strong reasoning skills, and an aptitude for working with computers. Additionally, working at this particular rating comes with several qualifications. Beyond passing basic entrance requirements for both the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery and the Coast Guard, you’ll also need to go through basic training. Basic training is eight weeks long, you may need additional schooling as an investigator for several months, and your commitment to the Coast Guard is likely to be a few years. After all that training and making the full commitment, however, you’ll be ready to start working and serving your country.
