What exactly do the Marines look for in a soldier? Well, there are a number of areas for which the Marines hire new recruits. If you’ve got a degree or skilled trade, you might consider working toward a job in one of a number of skilled technical jobs in the Marines.
Job Duties
Anyone interested in working in a number of fields could find a home in the Marines. Skilled technical work is a category that covers a vast array of jobs and duties that really depend on the specific job title. Beyond needing a little extra education and the ability to follow orders, very few of these jobs have similar work requirements. The only standard is that recruits need to be excellent students and have at least a little bit of training in their chosen field before applying.
So many different jobs are available under this employment heading. These brave men and women do any number of things ranging from working as a translator to working as a computer programmer or cytological analyst. Many of these jobs are similar to general technical work in the Marine Corps, but recruits need to have a little more training. Advancement opportunities exist for recruits who excel in skilled technical areas.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
There are a couple basic qualifications for the USMC before you can start thinking about choosing an MOS. You need to be between the ages of 17 and 29, physically fit, a US citizen or resident alien with a green card and permanent residence, and have a high school education to join up. Usually, those going into skilled technical trades with the Marine Corps have also gone to college, received a bachelor’s degree, or have experience in the workforce for their given trade. When taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, recruits who end up in skilled trades tend to score well in general science, verbal expression, mathematics knowledge, and mechanical comprehension.
The Marine Corps will take care of you once you join. Beyond a sense of family that lasts a lifetime, those recruited will enjoy options for educational assistance and healthcare. Of course, you’ll also gain valuable training that will help in any future job search for an employer that everyone recognizes. While compensation in the military is exceptional, pay varies by rank and years served rather than by specific job type. Be sure to contact a recruiter to see what it takes to be one of the few, the proud, the Marines.
