National Guard Technical Job

As with the Army, there are a number of employment opportunities in the United States National Guard. One of the types of work you can find in the National Guard involves working with highly technical systems. A variety of different technical jobs await you in this rather broad category. If you’re looking to further your education and pick up real-world skills to help you succeed, this is the place to be.

Job Duties
These workers will function in various capacities in the National Guard to keep complex systems running to benefit all of the other men and women in active service. Technical recruits take orders from superior officers and work closely with computers and technology to solve any problems that might arise. Of course, any job duties beyond that are specific to section and Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). One of the most amazing things about serving in the Guard is that it is a reserve force and, therefore, can be a part-time obligation if you so choose.

There are a few main areas that the National Guard is recruiting in for jobs related to technical fields. These employment opportunities include work in electronics, skilled technical trades, and surveillance & communication. Many of these National Guard jobs are similar to their Army counterparts. Anyone working in electronics will need to be familiar with electrical systems. Electronics Guardsmen could be doing anything from repairing radios to working as an avionics mechanic. Skilled technical is an even broader career track and encompasses everything from people working as translators to intelligence analysis. Surveillance and communication is similarly diverse and offers applicants the ability to operate field artillery radar, work ground surveillance, or even fly UAVs.

Job Qualifications and Compensation
As with any other military career, there are certain job requirements you must pass prior to enlisting. Before you ever join the National Guard, you need to be aware that it is a long-term commitment that could be up to several years even if you don’t decide to stick with it as a career. The National Guard also requires you to be a legal citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien, be between the ages of 17 and 42, and be relatively physically fit. Although each technical MOS will require different ASVAB scores, each MOS emphasizes knowledge of general science, arithmetic, and communication. Finally, you’ll need to go through basic and MOS training to qualify as a member of any of a technical division.

The National Guard also has signing bonuses, housing assistance, healthcare, and more that it offers to recruits. Pay, however, does vary by rank and experience, but is more or less the same across different technical job titles. Finally, one of the best things is that you can apply online to join the National Guard. They’ll send you information and put you in contact with a recruiter to decide if it’s the right decision for you.
