Navy Service and Safety Job

The U.S. Navy offers a plethora of entry-level jobs, or ratings, apart from typical ship or submarine work. The Navy has a need to employ law enforcement, firefighters, cooks, and many other ship serviceman jobs similar to those needed in any city. New Navy hires, or recruits, who earn appropriate test scores or have personal experience may find available careers in the service and safety division of the Navy.

Job Duties
Service and safety careers in the Navy typically manifest as behind-the-scenes jobs. Though these government employees receive the same training for combat, they specialize in work devoted to the service or safety of other crew members on ships or submarines, or even assisting with the operations of the Navy’s air division. Available careers may include lodging supervisor, launderer, military police, fire fighter, cook, and more ship serviceman positions. Following orders and the chain of command is the most important duty a service and safety troop in the Navy can perform.

The job duties assigned a Navy service and safety sailor range from swabbing the decks to cooking or even fighting fires. Navy service and safety workers must perform all duties assigned by the commanding officer. Navy service and safety sailors may need to train for and perform more duties than those assigned them, especially during times of war. Do not associate peaceful times with less important work, however. The duties performed by each Navy service and safety worker are of great importance both at home and while patrolling hostile waters.

Job Qualifications and Compensation
Applicants with the U.S. Navy must meet certain criteria for age, health, citizenship, criminal record, and education for employment consideration. Navy service and safety sailors must also perform admirably on the military career test, known as the ASVAB test. The many careers require new Navy recruits to perform well on several different areas of the test. Most Navy service and safety careers require good scores in verbal expression and arithmetic reasoning, though several careers may require high scores in other portions of the ASVAB, as well.

Navy pay scales differ according to rank and time served, but occupational title doesn’t affect this scale. Entry-level positions with the Navy do earn competitive salary and benefits packages, though. Navy recruits receive healthcare, paid vacation, housing, food, and more. Start your Navy application process today, and you could be on your way to earning competitive wages and comprehensive benefits afforded each member of the U.S. military. Apply online with the Navy and start the boating career of your dreams.
