Burlington Coat Factory started in 1924 as the Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation and primarily sold wholesale ladies coats and clothing. Monroe and Henrietta Milstein purchased a warehouse in Burlington, New Jersey, and opened the first modern Burlington Coat Factory retail store in 1972. The original retail location primarily sold coats for the whole family and grew to include several locations by the 1980s. As the business evolved, Burlington Coat Factory began selling clothing, shoes, and accessories for men, women, and children and even added a linens department in 1987.
