Joining the Coast Guard is almost as simple as filling out the Coast Guard application. How will you know what awaits unless you fill one out today?
In existence since 1790, the United States Coast Guard has been on a mission for maritime safety, security, and stewardship since its inception. Currently, there are about 50,000 active duty personnel and civilian employees in the Coast Guard and just as many are selected reservists or auxiliary personnel.
The Coast Guard is able to provide military operations under the Department of Defense, and has authority as both an armed service and as a law enforcement agency. The Coast Guard is also in charge of search and rescue missions at sea as well as providing aid to navigation and marine environmental protection. They may do anything from counter-piracy to protecting and rescuing stranded people and vessels.
The National Response Center is an example of one place for career opportunities. It handles all oil, chemical, biological, radiological, and etiological discharges into the environment anywhere on United States territory. Many opportunities offer flexible work schedules, great benefits, and growth potential. Furthermore, civilian employment is offered in 40 states and territories, including American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands with job options from working as a member of law enforcement and counter-narcotics to flying a rescue helicopter.
A number of different job options and titles are available when working as a member of the United States Coast Guard. One thing you might not expect is that the Coast Guard actually has part-time opportunities. Like the National Guard, it also has reserve options. The best part is that even those employed by the Coast Guard part-time qualify for benefits. Beyond just competitive pay and travel, you can also expect help with healthcare, retirement planning, and further training options.
Of course, a great paying job isn’t all you get when you talk to a recruiter and enlist in the Coast Guard. Employment options range from being an intelligence analyst to going out on patrol on one of their vessels. These jobs are an excellent way to build career experience and work history that could lead to a long-term job in law enforcement or anywhere else. Plus, the Coast Guard is always recruiting talented, hardworking people every day.
The type of person they look to hire on has strong moral values, is in good physical condition, and ready to serve our country. There may also be a few additional requirements, however. You must be between the ages of 17 to 27, although special exceptions may be made if you’re a reserve officer or attending school, have a high school diploma, have no more than two dependents, and are a US citizen or resident alien. You will also need to undergo checks for your background, credit, and security clearance.
While the Coast Guard doesn’t have a well-known special forces unit, that doesn’t mean there aren’t advancement opportunities. Plenty of specific jobs require you to rank up to even be considered for advanced training. Furthermore, jobs in the Coast Guard could lead to a long term career in the military, Department of Defense, or elsewhere in government.
No matter what you’re looking for, you know you can find a job with the US Coast Guard. There are tons of employment opportunities ranging from nearly entry-level to career tracks for those with specialized college degrees. Plus, the Coast Guard will help you pay your bills and loans to get through college and start your life. When you enlist, you’re not just working a normal job, you’re serving your country and building a future for everyone. Apply online right by filling out the Coast Guard application and talking to a recruiter today.
