History
Dollar General, founded in 1955 in Scottsville, KY, began as a true dollar store and sold no items costing over one dollar. The idea proved successful and founders J.L. Turner and son Cal operated 29 stores by 1957. Dollar General went public in 1968, four years after the death of J.L. Turner. Cal Turner Sr. turned the company over to his son, Cal Turner Jr., in 1977. Cal Turner Jr. led the company until his retirement in 2002, at which time Dollar General operated over 6,000 stores and reported $6 billion in yearly sales. A group of investors acquired Dollar General through stock purchases in 2007 and created a private company before taking Dollar General public yet again in 2009.
Special Services
Dollar General stores typically operate in communities too small to support large department stores. The business provides off-brand goods and discounted name-brand merchandise. Dollar General no longer operates as a true dollar store and carries many goods costing over one dollar. Some Dollar General Market stores carry expanded food selections and even sell produce, meat, and baked goods. Most Dollar General Market stores operate from former grocery store locations.
Community Involvement
Dollar General gives back to the communities it serves. Dollar General promotes, partners with, and advocates for local literacy programs across the U.S. Dollar General founder J.L. Turner started the company as a functionally illiterate worker. Dollar General strives to improve the reading of other individuals and uses the example of Turner to prove illiteracy cannot hold back diligent workers. Dollar General even provides a link to local literacy programs across the U.S. on the company website.
Environmental
Dollar General works to ensure low environmental impact throughout its business. The business operates more company-owned stores than any other retailer in the U.S. and strives to reduce waste and natural resource usage across the chain of department stores. Dollar General takes advantage of waste recycling, energy efficient lighting, low energy cost heating and air conditioning, and promotes green choices to customers.
Planned Expansion
As of January 2011, Dollar General operated no international business. The company plans to expand its over 9,000 store network with more than 600 additional U.S. stores. Dollar General runs locations in 35 U.S. states, but the planned expansion will take the company into new areas, such as Connecticut, Nevada, and New Hampshire. The new store locations must hire over 6,000 workers in addition to the numerous job openings found throughout the Dollar General empire.
Financial
Dollar General operates as a KKR portfolio company. KKR, formerly Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, runs an investment firm. KKR trades publicly under stock ticker KKR on the NYSE. Dollar General trades on the NYSE under DG. Dollar General operates roughly 10,000 company-owned store locations across the U.S. and reports yearly average revenues near $11 billion. The company claims operating income in excess of $900 million and net income exceeding $300 million. Dollar General employs approximately 80,000 workers across the U.S.
