Finish Line Application Video – How to Apply for a Job at Finish Line:
History
As runners, founders David Klapper, Alan Cohen, and John Domont wanted to create a retail concept incorporating every aspect of athletics and combine athletic apparel, sporting equipment, and knowledgeable staff. The idea came to fruition in 1976 when the business trio purchased franchising rights to The Athlete’s Foot, an Indianapolis athletic retailer. After The Athlete’s Foot, Klapper, Cohen, and Domont opened several locations in Indiana and Kentucky. By 1981, the three businessmen owned and operated 12 The Athlete’s Foot locations. Seizing the opportunity to create a new successful athletic retailer, the trio opened the first Finish Line store in 1982. By 1991, Finish Line operated more than 100 stores and reported over $100 million in sales. Finish Line experienced even more growth in the 2000s; by 2009, the retailer controlled over 700 brick-and-mortar stores as well as an online store.
Special Services
Operating primarily out of shopping malls, Finish Line models stores after sports arenas. Giant scoreboards hang from the ceiling and white track lines circle the check-out counter. Finish Line specializes in athletic apparel for men, women, and children. Products include shorts, shirts, hats, gloves, socks, swimwear, outerwear, and underwear. Finish Line stores also sell a wide variety of shoes and carry an enormous selection of both name-brand and off-brand sporting apparel, including Finish Line brand merchandise. An online store provides easy access to Finish Line merchandise and apparel.
Community Involvement
As active as its customers, Finish Line plays an important role in the community. Finish Line strives to promote healthy living in both kids and adults and regularly sponsors athletic events. Finish Line also participates in many charitable causes and helps raise awareness for socially relevant issues. In 1998, Finish Line founded Finish Line Youth Foundation aimed at raising funds for scholarships and grants and promoting active lifestyles in children.
Environmental
Finish Line strives to implement eco-friendly business practices whenever possible. Many Finish Line stores actively participate in recycling and waste reduction programs. Some Finish Lines even hold fundraisers to collect and donate old shoes to homeless shelters and other outreach programs around the world.
Planned Expansion
Only available in the United States and online, Finish Line operates more than 700 retail locations in 48 U.S. states. The company has announced no plans for international expansion as of June 2011. Finish Line plans to continue domestic expansion and offers all of its products online.
Financial
Formally known as Finish Line Inc., the retail business trades publicly on the NASDAQ under the stock ticker FINL. Finish Line began trading publicly in 1992. By 1995, Finish Line exceeded $500 million in sales. In 2004, Finish Line grossed roughly $1 billion in sales. Finish Line stands as one of the most profitable and successful athletic apparel retailers in the world and employs more than 11,000 entry-level workers and full-time professional associates in the United States.
