History
Founded as the Dixie Supply Co. in 1945 by Rufus Hibbett, Hibbett Sports originally sold sporting goods and aviation equipment. In 1949, Dixie Supply Co. began selling team-oriented athletic equipment and apparel. The retail company changed names in 1952 and began operating as Hibbett and Sons. The sporting goods retailer opened a second store location in the early-1960s and eventually expanded to several more locations by the end of the 1970s. The retail chain changed ownership in the 1980s and again in the early-1990s and by 1995 operated more than 75 stores. Hibbett Sports became a public company in 1996. By 2008, the sporting goods retailer operated more than 700 stores in 16 states.
