Six friends and career businessmen created the first Hooters in Clearwater, FL, in 1983. One year later, the company sold expansion and franchise rights to investors in Atlanta, GA. Hooters shipped the donated pantyhose to Matter of Trust and Indigo Ocean. The ecological charities stuffed the hosiery with fur and fleece to create booms. The charities then shipped the booms to the oil spill site to help collect oil from the water. The booms absorbed an estimated half-million gallons of oil.
