Job Duties
The main responsibilities of an Audiologist are to assist and provide treatment plans to patients with hearing disorders and disabilities. Audiologists also work with people who have problems with balance and other problems related to the ear. Using instruments like audiometers, computers, and testing devices like tuning forks, audiologists assess a patient’s problem and then provide them with a treatment plan in order to improve hearing capabilities. Audiologists also use some of this same equipment to diagnose people with balance problems.
Audiologists typically work in clean, comfortable environments. While not a physically demanding job, work in this profession does require that candidates have intense concentration and attention to detail. Primarily self-employed, some audiologists work contractually for different facilities and travel between them throughout a given day. Full-time professionals in this field generally work 40 hour weeks as well as some nights and weekends depending on their patient’s needs.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
To become an audiologist, candidates generally need to hold a doctoral degree in the specific field of audiology, as most states require this to practice. Graduation from one of these programs may be required to obtain a license to practice audiology and needs to be recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation. Candidates can also receive accreditation from the American Board of Audiology or by receiving their Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology.
Audiologists must be proven communicators and be able to demonstrate interpersonal-related skills. Employers favor those who are able to diagnose, test, and propose treatments in a manner that is easily understood by patients since the field’s terminology can be somewhat confusing at times. Patience and good listening skills are also key components of ideal candidates for a career in audiology. Advancement in this field generally comes from experience and opening your own practice. When working in a hospital setting, audiologists can become managers or supervisors of their department or division of labor. All applicants typically need to be able to pass a background check and drug screening for being hired. Audiologists generally make around $60,000 a year on average. Benefits for this position may include health care coverage, a retirement savings plan, and paid time off.
