Job Duties
Cardiovascular technicians work in medical laboratories dedicated to heart and blood-related issues. These medical techs perform blood tests to determine the presence of cardiovascular diseases or other abnormalities. Job duties include sterilizing lab instruments, collecting samples, performing tests, and analyzing test results. Specialized cardiovascular technicians may have other responsibilities. For example, electrocardiographic techs operate EKG machines and analyze EKG reports. Cardiovascular techs often work long hours, stand for extended periods of time, and may have to be on call certain nights and weekends.
Once experienced or further educated, motivated cardiovascular technicians may advance into lab management or cardiovascular technologist positions. Cardiovascular technicians and technologists often find work in hospitals, specialized clinics, public health organizations, and research institutions.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Qualifications for cardiovascular technician positions include having a high school diploma and being familiar with lab equipment and medical instruments. Cardiovascular techs may need to have either a two-year associate’s degree or certification. Cardiovascular certificates can be earned through work with hospitals, the military, or through vocational training. Candidates should have attention to detail and basic computer skills. Successful cardiovascular technicians may be promoted into the position of cardiovascular technologist. Cardiovascular technologists must hold at least a bachelor’s degree and have some experience in the medical field.
