Job Duties
Dietetic technicians provide counseling and education to individuals with special dieting needs. Working under a dietitian, dietetic techs prepare recipes, plan eating regimens, and implement nutrition programs. Sometimes called a dietary aide, nutrition technician, or a dietary manager, these dietetic workers may do work for clients or work for a medical institution. Dietetic job duties include analyzing patient dietary histories, assisting dietitians, researching nutrition and other food-related topics, creating menus and diets, and preparing meals.
Once further medical training or education is completed, motivated dietetic technicians may advance into dietitian jobs or become part of medical center management. Dietetic technicians and other nutrition specialists find work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, research firms, and other medical centers.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Qualifications for dietetic technician jobs include having at least a high school diploma and some dietary training. Dietetic technicians often need to have either a two-year associate’s degree or dietetic certificate. Certification can be earned through vocational schooling, community college courses, or certain programs at hospitals and other medical centers. Applicants should be able to demonstrate strong attention to detail and vast knowledge of nutrition. Successful dietetic technicians may be promoted into other jobs in the nutrition industry and may become dietitians after undergoing additional training. Registered dietitians often have a bachelor’s degree and must gain certification by passing an examination.
On average, dietetic technicians earn salaries between $22,000 and $30,000 a year. After becoming a manager or dietitian, workers may earn a salary of $45,000 to $55,000 per year.
