Job Duties
Job duties for a home health aide are relatively similar to other titles as personal aides. These workers will be responsible for emptying bedpans and changing soiled linens, helping patients move and walk, assist patients with medical devices like respirators or inhalers, and perform general first aide and health related jobs. These caregivers may also provide clients with meals or just offer patients company.
Aides must guard against back injury since they may be moving patients in and out of beds or vehicles. The wide variety of job duties will require an aide to be well-informed and able to learn fairly quickly. Home health aides may also work without a supervisor the majority of the time and should therefore be able to make tough decisions and manage crises quickly and effectively. Good memory and interpersonal skills are a must because aides may work with a single patient daily or several patients one day every week.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Jobs as a home health aide are an excellent way to get a start in the healthcare field. These jobs are as close to entry-level as any position in the medical industry. Although the job will likely require a background check and drug test, all training can typically be acquired on the job from a registered nurse. As with other fields that require medical knowledge, some employers may request licensure and 75 hours of training prior to hiring a new worker. Above all, however, aides should demonstrate a desire to help people, communicate effectively and compassionately, and be in good health since they will occasionally need to deal with sick or disorderly patients.
Home health aides are eligible for similar benefits to other professionals in the health industry, including healthcare, paid vacation time, and a retirement plan. Depending on the employer, there may be additional qualifications, but this also generally means there are additional benefits and advancement opportunities to qualify for. Pay for these positions is usually around $20,000, but may be higher with experience and additional qualifications.
