Hospital Licensed Practical Nurse Job Description |

Job Duties
Licensed regular and vocational practical nurses provide personalized patient care and get to interact on a very individual level with their clients. Job duties may include monitoring vitals, dressing wounds, administering basic procedures, reporting to physicians, and a number of other basic care options. In certain states, these nurses may also be responsible for administering medications or IV fluids.
Due to the high interaction with patients who may be undergoing difficult or complicated procedures, a caring attitude and good communications skills are part of any job as a nurse. Though around a quarter of all LPN and LVN workers do work in a hospital, many take jobs in nursing care facilities as well as physician’s offices. Jobs may even be available in home healthcare, employment services, residential facilities, and elsewhere. While working in this job, it may be possible to advance into the position of registered nurse with only a little extra training.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Licensed practical nurses must complete a year-long training program that is offered at many vocational institutions and colleges. LPNs and LVPNs must also pass the NCLEX-PN licensing exam which is administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The exam will test an individual’s knowledge of maintaining a safe and effective care environment, promotion and maintenance of health, psycho-social integrity, and physiological integrity. Beyond training, all candidates must pass a background check and drug test.
Pay varies for these licensed practical nurses depending on where they work, but the hospital workers earn an annual salary of roughly $41,000. Benefits are fairly standard across the board, including healthcare, paid time off, retirement plans, and possibly more. Eligibility will depend on whether or not the nurse is working for a hospital or other care provider and whether or not the position is full-time.
