Job Duties
Technicians in medical laboratories run lab tests to determine information about diseases and the effectiveness of medicine. Lab techs must analyze samples of blood, urine, and other bodily fluids and record the results of various tests. Basic responsibilities include collecting samples, performing tests, sterilizing instruments, analyzing results, keeping records, and operating laboratory equipment. Depending on employer, lab techs will have to communicate with other departments or outside clients. On-the-job training is provided to new hires in medical laboratories.
After additional education and training, medical lab techs may advance into laboratory manager or lab technologist positions. As a lab technician or technologist, job seekers may find work in clinics, hospitals, research firms, or large pharmaceutical companies.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Medical lab technicians are expected to have at least a high school diploma and a familiarity with laboratory equipment and instruments. Lab techs need to either have a two-year associate’s degree or certificate. Certification can be earned through vocational schools, work with the military, and at many hospitals. Basic computer skills are a definite advantage in the hiring process, since the majority of lab analysis is done on computers. Workers who excel as lab technicians may be promoted into a medical lab technologist position. Lab technologists must have a four year college degree and some laboratory experience.
The average medical lab technician earns a salary of around $35,000 per year. After advancement into a lab technologist position, a worker could easily make over $60,000 a year.
