Job Duties
Opticians are part doctor and part fashion designer. These health industry employees are responsible for prescribing specific sight aides and making sure that they fit well with a client’s features. Job duties will include using a variety of tools to measure both the strength of prescription needed as well as facial dimensions to properly fit eyewear from glasses and contacts to artificial eyes and cosmetic coverings. Although opticians may work for hospitals, other employers include optical stores, large department or club stores, and medical offices. Opticians will be on their feet for at least several hours during the course of a normal work day. Generally, the job is full-time and typically involves normal business hours.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Although a four year degree is not strictly required, an optician is expected to have at least some college coursework in subject matter like mathematics, physics, and anatomy. Opticians must also be computer literate. Much of this training can be achieved either through college or structured apprenticeship programs. Although some states may not require licensure, licensing is mandatory in most states. However, this training is usually provided by larger employers. Beyond licensure, an optician may also seek certification which will further demonstrate their skill level and garner higher wages. Finally, these workers must work directly with the public and must therefore have good communication skills, high dexterity, the ability to perform precision work, and be patient. Drug tests and background tests are generally also required for most employment opportunities.
These positions pay differently depending on where the optician is working. However, an average salary for these employment opportunities is around $35,000 per year. Benefits will also vary on employer, but generally include healthcare, a 401(k) or other retirement plan, and paid vacation time.
