Job Duties
Pharmacists usually require an enormous amount of training and education and are also held to a high moral and ethical standard and traditionally need help caring out their occupational duties. Pharmacy aides and technicians are needed to maintain files and records, accept prescriptions, prepare prescriptions’ labels, clean pharmacy equipment, and other similar duties. These workers will almost always work in a pharmacy, though this could be in a convenience store, hospital, medical office, or other setting.
Regardless of whether an individual is working in a hospital or stand-alone pharmacy, the work environment is usually well-lit, well-ventilated, and highly organized, though it may also be rather stressful. In facilities that are open 24 hours a day, there are likely to be much more varied schedules for workers. These schedules may include weekend and holiday work as well. Technicians and aides are also able to work part-time.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
The education and training required to become a pharmacy aide is generally fairly minimal. Much of the training required can be acquired on the job, but most employment opportunities require the individual to have at least a high school diploma or GED. Typically, assistants begin their careers as aides and have prior experience working in a pharmacy. These workers must be detail oriented, calm, personable, and be highly professional. Those looking for work in the medical industry may also be required to complete a background check and drug test.
Pay scales vary based on where the individual is working, but the average starting salary for a pharmacy aide is around $22,000. Once working as a pharmacy technician, an employee in this sector of the medical industry is likely to make closer to $30,000 a year. These jobs are also an excellent way to get experience in a pharmacy if you’re looking for careers in pharmacy or dispensing medication. Benefits will vary based on the organization, but are sure to include healthcare, a retirement plan, and paid vacation.
