Job Duties
Work as a medical records and health information technician involves extensively maintaining medical records of patients. This includes categorizing, organizing, filing, and managing of all medical records and information. Medical records and health information technicians provide data and records for doctors and nurses at their request. Included in this data are x-rays, lab test results, examination results, treatment outcomes, medical history, and observations made by licensed healthcare practitioners. Technicians also review documents for accuracy and are responsible for protecting the security of all medical records and documentation.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
In order to become a qualified candidate for work as a medical records and health information technician one must generally hold at least an associate’s degree accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. All applicants must be at least 18 years or older to apply for this position. Other requirements include a background check, possible drug screening, and an employment history check. Most, if not all employers, show a preference to candidates having some prior experience in a health care setting.
Employers generally prefer to hire candidates that are fully qualified as registered health information technicians. Written examinations are also typically asked of candidates that are offered by the American Health Information Management Association. Certifications in medical coding might also be required of candidates. Some employers offer assistance and even training in this area. Typical pay for this position is generally averages $33,880 a year salary. Advancement in this occupation typically requires candidates receiving a bachelor’s or master’s degree in information systems or other advanced specialty certifications.
