Job Duties
Nurse aides, orderlies, and hospital attendants are responsible for a variety of tasks assisting the regular medical staff in a hospital. Job duties may include a number of different types of activities from working closely with patients to acting in a support capacity. Working as an aide or an orderly, the employee may be responsible for feeding patients, preparing food trays, measuring liquids and vital signs, administering medicines under supervision, and assisting patients with bedpans and urinals. Additional job duties include moving patients, making and changing beds, answering patient calls for help, cleaning rooms, and delivering flowers and messages.
The work environment for orderlies is fairly similar to that of a psychiatric aide. While the majority of employers are hospitals, it is also possible to work for nursing homes and in home healthcare. Working as a nurse aide or orderly can be part-time or full-time, but tends to be scheduled work at around 40 hours a week.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Much of the education required to become a nursing aide or orderly can be acquired on the job, but there are certain necessities. Some training is essential through a university, hospital, or other institution. Certain coursework such as body mechanics, nutrition, communication, bedside manner, and anatomy are required bodies of knowledge for any orderly. In some cases, licensure and up to 75 hours of training may also be required by certain states or employers. Nurse’s aides and orderlies must also complete a drug test and background check.
Average salaries for nursing aides are around $20,000 to $25,000 a year, but pay will vary based on location, institution, and experience. Benefits are typically reserved for full-time workers and hospitals provide significantly more than those working privately for a family or organization. Benefits may include employee healthcare, paid time off, and advancement opportunities with slightly more training.
