Job Duties
Work as an occupational therapist assistant involves caring for the emotional, physical, mental, and developmental well-being of those with disabilities. Working alongside occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants help design personal treatment plans for rehabilitation that utilize various therapeutic activities and exercises and assist in ensuring patients are performing them properly. Some everyday tasks occupational therapy assistants may help patients learn and relearn include things like writing, reading, putting on clothes, personal hygiene, and eating.
There are a couple of different job titles involved in this profession. Become either an occupational therapy assistant-licensed (COTA-L), a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA), a licensed occupational therapy assistant or an occupational therapy assistant. Occupational therapy assistant jobs are highly intensive and oftentimes demanding. Candidates must be good working with their hands and be in good health as occupational therapy assistants are on their feet for most of the day. Work is both part-time and full-time, but assistants generally work 40 hours a week.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Occupational therapy assistants must complete a minimum 16 weeks of supervised clinic or fieldwork in order to become eligible for employment. This is usually accompanied by at least an associate’s degree from a college, university, or institution that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. Different states have different requirements in relation to licensing, certification and registration. Certification of occupational therapy assistants is done by the National Board for Certifying Occupational Therapists, but is voluntary and not inherently required to be considered for employment.
Occupational therapy assistants are paid salary and typically make around $45,000 a year. Generally, advancement in this position requires either a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field, like early-childhood development or social services.
