Job Duties
Sometimes called radiographers or X-ray technicians, radiologic techs work in radiology departments in medical centers or laboratories. These medical employees operate radiologic equipment, such as X-ray machines or ultrasound machines, in order to create digital images of patients’ organs, bones, or other body parts. Radiologic workers and physicians use these digital images to diagnose diseases and other physical abnormalities. Technicians and technologists working in the field of radiology may specialize in areas, like sonography, nuclear medicine, mammography, radiotherapy, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
After additional training or education, hardworking radiologic technicians may advance into management or radiologic technologist positions. X-ray techs and other radiology workers often find work in hospitals, specialized clinics, public health organizations, and research institutions.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Radiologic technicians must have at least a high school diploma and some familiarity with medical equipment and related instruments. These med techs need to have either a two-year associate’s degree or certification earned through training. Radiologic certificates can be earned after completing courses in a vocational school or by working in certain hospitals or with the military. Job candidates should be motivated, have strong attention to detail, and be capable of working with computers and other technological equipment. Hardworking radiologic technicians may advance into radiologic technologist jobs. Radiologic technologists must hold a college degree or have certification gained through specific training in the medical field.
Typically, radiologic technicians earn a salary between $45,000 and $55,000 per year. Once promoted to a radiologic technologist or managerial position, workers may easily earn over $60,000 a year.
