Job Duties
As a veterinary technologist or technician your general responsibilities will be to work under the supervision of and assist licensed veterinarians in caring for animals. Specific job duties related to this line of work may include administering medication to pets, providing treatment and care to animals, assisting in surgery, recording case histories, and maintaining treatment records. Sterilizations, vaccinations, and euthanasia may also be required of candidates.
Veterinary technologists and technicians typically work 40 hour weeks. Depending on their employer, they might also be asked to work nights and could even be put on call 24/7 in some instances. Work atmosphere can be noisy and dirty, as jobs commonly involve work directly with sickly or injured animals.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
Most of the responsibilities of veterinary technologists and veterinary technicians overlap. Both are commonly referred to as “Vet Techs.” The main difference in the two positions is in the level of responsibility and the degree of qualifications for each position. Veterinary technologist positions typically require more education and demand more responsibility. Veterinary technicians typically only need to hold a 2 year degree, but the program must be accredited with the American Veterinary Medical Association. To become a veterinary technologist, you must hold a four year degree as well as accreditation with AVMA.
To become a veterinary technologist or technicians, applicants must also be able to pass a number of clearance tests. Some of these tests include backgrounds checks, drug screening, and an evaluation of employment history. Pay for these positions are generally competitive. Veterinary technologists and technicians are generally paid salary make around $30,580 on average per year. In addition to pay, eligible candidates qualify for benefits packages that may include paid group and health insurance and retirement plan options.
