Hotel Bartender Job Description

Job Duties
Bartender positions will only be available in hotels that have a bar or restaurant with a bar on the premises. Bars are fairly common in hotel lobbies, though, and the majority of hotels and resorts in vacation hotspots will have at least one bar on hotel grounds. At a hotel, the duties of a bartender include manning the bar, making and serving drinks, and cashing guests out after the purchase of drinks. The bartender may also be responsible for cleaning the bar area, opening and closing the bar, keeping inventory, and restocking items. Basic computer skills may be required if the use of a computerized cash register is part of the job.

Job Qualifications and Compensation
Qualifications for bartending jobs will vary slightly by hotel. Most positions are basically entry-level and do not require any extensive training or education; however, some hotels may require applicants have either a bartending license or on-the-job training from a previous employer. To even be considered for a bartending position, you will need to be at least 21 years of age. A high school diploma may also be required, but it is less important than training and experience. Beyond these minimal qualifications, interpersonal skills and an ambitious personality are all you’ll need to succeed in bartending.

Salary and compensation will vary largely based on the individual hotel, its location, and on the classiness of the bar. On average, bartenders will start at minimum wage plus tips. Bar workers usually make the majority of their pay from tips, so this aspect of compensation will vary the most depending on the particular establishment at which you’re looking to find employment. Benefits will also depend on the hotel and number of hours worked. Full-time associates will likely receive a benefits package, including perks like healthcare coverage, time off, and hotel discounts.
