Job Duties
The job of a cook or a food preparations assistant varies widely, depending on exactly where you’ll be working and what kind of food you’ll be preparing. Depending on your experience and the hotel you’re working for, there may be a number of different job duties involved. For example, work as a food prep or a line cook at a small hotel will only involve basic cooking skills and the preparation of standard food items whereas a much higher class establishment may actually have experienced cooks creating their own menus.
The duties for each job start at a rather basic level and escalate depending on where you’re working. In a small hotel kitchen, you’ll only need basic knowledge of food and will only be cooking for whatever the room service menu offers. You may also be expected to wash dishes and clean the kitchen. The higher up you go, you may learn to make dishes that are unique to your restaurant or serve under a head cook who creates unique menus for your hotel. In the most extreme cases, you may be part of a world-renowned kitchen where you manage your own staff and are given total creative freedom with your dishes and ingredients.
Job Qualifications and Compensation
At its most basic, working as a cook can be entry-level. The job requires good communication skills, the ability to stand for long periods of time, and patience when performing repetitive duties. If you manage to find an entry-level job working as a cook, it can be a great way to break into a number of different industries, including the restaurant and hospitality businesses. Most jobs as an actual chef will require experience in food preparation and culinary arts, so this is a great way to get your start.
As with a lot of other jobs, cooking positions will vary by the experience required and amount of creative freedom you’re given to craft your meals. Each of the levels has its own pay scale, but salaries are likely to be around minimum wage at entry-level. The average wage for a permanent, full-time cook is around $19 an hour, although it can get as high as $85 an hour at the most sophisticated establishments. Employment perks also vary, depending on employer and how long you’ve been with the hotel, but eligible employees receive benefits packages, including healthcare coverage and a 401(k) retirement plan.
