Job Interview Question & Answer: Describe Your Ideal Job

How to Answer the Question:

Something that might be asked of you during the hiring process for any job might be to describe your ideal job. While we all have that certain, special job we’ve always wanted tucked away in the recesses of our minds, a job interview is not the time to bring up where you would rather be. As a rule of thumb, you want to keep things professional, but you also want to make sure you’re talking about the present moment. Try to make it sound like this is your ideal career path, if possible.

While it’s good to think ahead, and a potential employer may ask you to do that, talking about a place you would rather work, especially if it’s not the job you’re trying to be hired for, might send them the wrong message and turn them off to hiring you. Employment is about what you might be able to attain in the future, but it is also rooted in the here and now. You need to remain aware of this fact during a job interview.
