How to Answer the Question:
Be honest, but only discuss abilities related to the specific duties of the job. During a job interview for a company with clients speaking predominantly English, Korean, and Russian, your knowledge of Spanish may seem fairly irrelevant to the interviewer. Ask if there is a particular language the employer desires, and profess your belief in your ability to learn this language.
Don’t consider high school and college foreign language courses fluency in a particular language. Few Americans speak bilingually, and most of those couldn’t last more than a few moments in a fast-paced business argument occurring over telephone lines or the internet. Unless you are confident you could discuss someone’s most intimate hopes and fears while understanding even the small tedious mentions of minuscule objects in their diatribe, you probably aren’t fluent in a foreign language.
