Job Interview Question & Answer: Have You Served In The Armed Forces? If Yes, In What Branch? |
|
|
|
How to Answer the Question:
Discuss your military career at this point in a job interview. Remember to be honest because your U.S. military history is on file. Designate which branch you served with, time served, and your discharge. Also, discuss additional training or expertise you may have earned in the service, but keep your answer short and professional.
Do not discuss war time occurrences, complaints, or other disparaging remarks best left out of the hiring process. Don’t get involved in graphic depictions of your service or place your superiors in a poor light. Keep your injuries or disabilities earned during war private unless they will specifically keep you from completing you assigned tasks. Do not lie about your military history, including a dishonorable discharge or other military legal proceedings, as the employer has a right to terminate employees with falsified histories.

If I get this question asked, should I tell them I was in the Special Forces for the Marines and tell them exactly what I did, or do you think that is too much information to tell at an interview?
June 9th, 2011 at 2:42 pmNo, never.
July 6th, 2011 at 4:07 pmThe Marine Corps doesn’t have any special forces. If you want my advice, no I wouldn’t lie to them. If you are referring to MARSOC or Force Recon, those aren’t special forces so don’t claim to be if you were a part of either.
When I talk about my military history I keep it short and sweet. Tell them when I served, what my MOS was, and for how long. If they want to know anything more they will ask it.
