Job Interview Question & Answer: Tell Me About Yourself

How to Answer the Question:

Always stay professional during a job interview and the hiring process. This question is not asking you to describe your childhood, home life, or personal interests. A good response to this question should focus on your career and detail your work history. Remember to tailor all responses for the job you’re applying. Highlight past job experience relevant to the work you are interviewing for. Also, try to be as concise as possible. This question is just the beginning and not a novel.

You want to answer all job interview questions honestly but concisely. Don’t get wordy, don’t stretch the truth, and don’t reveal information you don’t want your future boss to know. If you want to become this person’s new hire, don’t tell them things they don’t want to hear from a prospective associate. This is not a good time to discuss your best keg stand time or the number of goals you scored in the big game. Also, don’t discuss things like salary or pay, work benefits, or other items best saved for later in the job interview.

Hi, my name is Ebony, most recently I have gained experience working for turbotax as a live chat person during the tax season. I handled customer service, IT problems with the software, and processing inbound orders. Prior to that I worked for AT&T on the phones handling customer service for billing issues and trouble shooting any problems with cell phones. I also processed orders for new phones and upgrades when customers called in. Upsells were not required however if I knew a product would be a great match for the customer, I took the time to inform them about the it. I spent 12 years serving in the US Army in human resources which has given me great tools.

  20. dedra:

most employers look at this response to see what type of person you are. by giving statements that relate to the job that your looking for –focus on key aspects of your prior experience, example would be i have xxx years exp in customer service, i enjoy working directly with customers and on my off time i enjoy doing xxxxxxxx . keep it short and to the point

  22. jamie:

Keep it short and sweet….and not too personal- dont go there. stating your name and age sounds childish and very “first day of school”-ish lol. just briefly state recent work history, couple interests, and maybe state a goal you have (one related to job you desire is best)….again- keep it short and sweet. ps: dont be nervous it will show. confidence is key to success my friends! :)

  23. Brianna:

My name is Brianna, I’m 16 and a high school student. I’m very friendly although I’m a little shy at first, but this allows me to actually get to know people before I trust them. I like video games, and video editing. Sometimes I edit skate videos for my friends. Unfortunately I have 0 work experience but in school I’ve always been a hard worker. I think having a job at Zumies would be amazing and I’d really love to work here.

    Cathlyn:
Last time I checked, you write your age/birthdate on your application. So, if they’ve taken the time to read through what you’ve written down, they should know how old you are before the interview.

As for a lot of you posting on here…god I hope you don’t interview like you post online. Good Lord.
Also, it’s not Date-A-Palooza, so it’s not necessary to go into detail what you like to do in your personal life such as hobbies, etc. Stick to professional skills and experience that you know you’ve gained from either other jobs and such.
Example: In 2008, I started working at a food distribution warehouse. My duties included putting together orders for different companies, and since then I’ve been creating and billing invoices for said companies. In March of 2011, I was employed at a mini golf course that required me to use a register and become familiar with a mall environment and the public.

    Hi,
My name is Sharon. and I am 20 years old. I have graduated from a strict European High School this year. I have been a babysitter for 1,5 year and took care of 2 children. I love children and working with children is my passion. Honesty is very important for me!!! I work hard. Children never gets bored next to me.

  36. Cathlyn:

Excuse me Bruce … don’t tell them your age? A juvenile response? Businesses by law cannot hire anyone under the age of 16. It literally becomes an under age issue with child labor laws. Businesses can get into serious trouble for hiring underage children.
