Job Interview Question & Answer: What Are Your Weaknesses?

How to Answer the Question:

Employers ask this question during the hiring process to find any red flags before they become an issue during employment. Unsuitable job candidates will reveal the reasons why they’re not qualified for the position at hand. Never divulge information which could hurt you professionally or diminish your chances of being hired.

Don’t downplay your abilities during a job interview, but do not talk about your strengths as if you don’t have any weaknesses. A clever interviewee will only disclose a weakness when they have already taken steps to compensate for it. A good response to this interview question is to describe a professional challenge and how you overcame it. Remember to state what you learned from the process and how it made you better both personally and professionally.

Dawnette, For a weakness, tell them something you are not good at but want to improve. Maybe your too impatient and you are trying hard to relax. Knowing that you have a weakness and that you are trying to improve will work well.
    Hope this helps. Good Luck!

your weakness is when you presuring yourself and somebody else is presuring you and you don’t believe in yourself that one day you can make it and when ypu go to a job interview even though there’s presure but be confident and thik positive then you won’t feel weak no more.

a good response? saying that you were weak with delegating. you take on too many tasks when instead you can delegate some of the responsibilities to others in your group? would this sound bad?

I suggest stating a weakness such as a lack of knowledge in a particular area but also state how you’re either taking a class or doing self study to overcome this.
This could be done with shyness as well and that you’re either taking a class on public speaking or as Alana stated, how you’re using this weakness to your advantage by keeping your relationships more secure and trusting.

MY WEAKNESS IS THAT I CAN BE SHY , ALSO I GET AGGERVATED WHEN I SEE OTHERS PICKING UP ON A TASK FASTER THEN ME. SOMETIMES I LET MY EMOTIONS GET THE BEST OF ME ..

should i say that my weakness is shy

  14. alana:

Make your weakness a positive. For example… “I’m shy at first, but this allows me to actually get to know people before I trust them.” I used this for an mock interview by a local news channel representive and they made note of that at the end saying it was a good response. The interveiwer also added that people make their responses to this question all negative.

My weakness is that I am so determined to never be late to anything that I am obsessively early and spend a lot of time waiting, I wait in waiting rooms, wait for movies to start, wait for the other person to show up, etc. (then out a positive spin on it) So in turn I have learned great patience. In addition, in my job, this actually works to my advantage as it allows me time to get to work and get settled, have a cup of tea, read through some emails or whatever and start the day calm and prepared not in a frenzy. (I love this answer) I have literally never been late to work.

I see vocabulary, word usage, grammar and punctuation weaknesses in the posts on this thread. Maybe brush up on your English skills in order to present yourself more professionally when writing responses. Just sayin’.

  18. Markymark:

2 PJ: I was going to write a response, but I’ve just decided to totally agree with you. I thought I was the only one who minds that. Fortunately not:)

I would say something that is relevant to the job that you are applying for, but not directly related to your immediate job task. If you are applying for a customer service position, obviously, being shy and working on it will not get you the job, common sense. It could be something along the lines of taking on too many responsibilities as Tina mentioned whereas you can easily delegate if you are in a supervisory role. Or as far as I am concerned, my weakness is not surrounding myself with a life outside of work:(

Good luck to all and sorry I couldn’t keep it brief…

To tell you the truth, I easily get distracted, I lose track of time, I sometimes goof off, I get carried away by other things, and when it comes to note-taking, I sometimes…doodle.

My weakness used to be I was sick if I achieved something that i was not top others.
For example: if I got #2, i felt sick. Because I wanted o be #1.

I would be sick for couple days.

Now I hated to change job because I worked too slow. However, I have to be better. Therefore, I have to do. I have to forced myself very hard to do.

My greatest weakness is being shy towards my boss and district managers. All I can do is smile nervously. I know when your boss and district managers are around they are observing you as a team member and I start clamming up in a shell. However, this is the opportunity to show them that they have hired one of the best employees and you love doing your job.

  23. Niya:

One is that I tend to forget and need things to be repeated a lot. This has happened many times a little while ago. I fixing this problem by writing things down more often, and setting alarm clocks for important dates. Another one of my flaws is that I’m a tad bit shy, so I started to talk to more people, say hi down the hallway, and help others in need. I feel like I am improving this, because I always feel satisfied in the end.

Couldn’t agree more, PJ and Markymark! PJ’s comment was funny thou! If I go along the line of “not being able to delegate and putting a lot on myself; can I also say that one of my weaknesses is that I can never say no? Or It is hard for me to say no?

Well one weakness that I have is that I get bored pretty easily, but if I’m working I will always be doing something so that shouldn’t be a problem at all. I’m also a little bit shy but once I get to know someone i am very talkative.

My weakness is being impatient as a leader of a group, I tend to take over my teams task if I see that it is not being done right away!!

  32. Lead Lady:

shy won’t help you get hired so stop puttin that. They will think its too much time to get you comfortable to open your mouth. As several people have said, your weakness should be a strength disguised. Such as i’m too competitive or i never give up or i go out my way to help everyone or i’m too trusting or i’m a perfectionist so i triple check my work. That should help alot of you.
