How to Answer the Question:
This question is designed to gauge the ambition of a job seeker. Employers want to hire workers with goals. In your response, list some professional goals and your means of achieving these goals. Describe what you’re looking for in terms of employment. You may want to consider the same question for 10, 15, and 20 years. Prospective employers are looking for loyalty and personal values as much as commitment to the short-term.
Although it may seem the appropriate time to talk about salary, benefits, and other job perks, you’re not far enough along in the hiring process. Those questions ought to wait until the employer brings it up or is ready to offer you a job. Again, you don’t want to seem too eager or too focused on pay. The company has given you this job interview to get to know you, not to offer you jobs immediately. Instead, talk about career aspirations and long-term stability if asked this interview question. Remember to stay professional. Don’t talk about personal goals here.
