Job Interview Question & Answer: Would You Say You’re a Big-Picture or Detail-Oriented Person?

How to Answer the Question:

This is a trick question. Employers want to know you can functionally work on the details of a particular assignment while accomplishing the big picture. Discuss your ability to accomplish the small details of a particular task while keeping a firm grasp on the overall project. Cite examples only if they are true and fit particularly well within the interviewer’s analogy. Talk about business projects you assisted with or oversaw.

Do not limit yourself to one choice as this makes you seem less dynamic than individuals able to work on details within the big picture. Don’t mess up a job interview with unprepared responses. Ensure the hiring process goes smoothly and prepare your responses, complete with examples from your business history, before landing an interview. Keep your answer short and to the point.

I would have to say I am a detail oriented person when I get asked this question. Sometimes it is the small details that people miss that matter most. I think being a detail oriented person is a great attribute.

In order to be a successful detail oriented person, one must also be a big picture person due to the fact that one will not reach a goal if they do not have one in the first place.

I would find some middle ground. If you’re detail oriented, say that this is because you’re focus is the big picture; that without the small details, the big picture wouldn’t turn out the best it could be. :]
