After a fire destroyed the original Sanders Court & Café location in 1939, Sanders rebuilt the establishment and went on to introduce the pressure cooker later the same year. The first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise opened in 1952. By the early-1960s, KFC operated roughly 600 franchised units throughout the United States and Canada. In 1979, over 6,000 KFC restaurants existed around the world and sales peaked in the billions. Acquired in 1986 by Pepsico Inc., Kentucky Fried Chicken became a part of Tricon Global Restaurants Inc. in 1997 before Tricon officially changed names to Yum! Brands Inc. in 2002.
