Founded in 1926 by Colonel Lewis Britton, Northwest Airlines began under the banner Northwest Airways. Initially Northwest Airways flew mail for the U.S. Postal Service and rarely carried passengers. Northwest became a passenger plane company in 1927 and became an international airline in 1928. Northwest changed names to Northwest Orient Airlines in the 1950s before merging with Republic Airways in 1986 and dropping the word Orient from the name.
Northwest Airlines grew throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s before deciding to merge with Delta Air Lines. The Northwest and Delta merger gained approval in 2008. The FAA granted Delta the right to operate Delta and Northwest under a single name, and the Northwest name was discontinued in 2010.
Northwest Airlines no longer exists in name, but interested applicants can apply online with Delta or one of several other airline companies today.
