Plato’s Closet was founded in 1999. Each store is individually owned and operated by their parent company, The Winmark Corporation. The stores are resale franchises that buy and sell quality, used clothing and accessories from brand name designers. Since the beginning, their mission has been to provide affordable trends to pre-teens and young adults.
The first Plato’s Closet was opened in Columbus, Ohio, by founders Lynn and Dennis Blum. When naming the store, they asked for help from their teenage son who came up with the first name “Plato” in honor of the ancient Greek philosopher who was also concerned with the act of preservation. They chose the last name “Closet” because they wanted to be able to relate to American teenagers who keep clothes in closets. Today, there are over 300 Plato’s Closet franchises across the county as well as several working the market in Canada.

hi my name is miranda, just wanted to let everyone one here know what a truely wonderful company platos closet is. as a former 5 year employee and storemanager for not only platos but once upon a child i was given the experience, drive and confidence i needed to believe in my self and the world around me. I eventually moved on to manage a larger corporate store making alot of money and to be honest id give all the money back just to go back to doing what i love! when your told that if you love what u do for a living it feels like you never have to work and beleive me guys it is true! I appreciate everything platos closet did for me and my career and i i cant think mike reese my former boss enough! Good luck to all those who want the most awesome job out there… but be prepared to work for it! lol

May 8th, 2011 at 5:59 pmPlato’s Closet is a nice place to trade items of clothing or buy them. I traded a lot of clothes in for cash when I was younger and it was worth it. The more name brands you have the more cash you get back for them. I like how you can get what might have cost $90 in the original store the item came from for $14 or $20 at Plato’s Closet. I want to work here as a full-time sales associate, I know it would be worth it.
