Subway Job Opportunities
Did you know that there are more than 34,000 Subway restaurants around the world? Fred DeLuca founded Subway in Bridgeport, CT, in 1965 as a way to pay for medical school. The submarine sandwich restaurant saw great success, and by 1974, Subway owned 16 additional locations across Connecticut. Today, Subway operates as the largest submarine sandwich restaurant chain in the world. The brand also ranks as the world’s largest single-brand restaurant chain and second largest restaurant operator. The fast food chain consists of over 37,000 company-owned and franchised locations across nearly 100 countries and territories. Subway remains privately owned.
Subway offers a wide selection of choices for its made-to-order sandwiches. The brand earns notoriety for offering fresh ingredients. Subway promotes a healthy lifestyle and has a spokesperson, Jared, who lost 245 pounds by adhering to a Subway diet for nearly a year. The fast food company also earns recognition for its large presence across the U.S. and abroad.
With thousands of locations across the globe, Subway employs a large workforce. The quick-service restaurant chain primarily hires sandwich artists to fill hourly positions. Subway also offers entry-level leadership jobs and upper-level manager careers. Qualities a Subway associate should possess include problem-solving and written and verbal communication skills. Subway employees should also have some high school education and physical capabilities, such as the ability to lift at least 30 pounds.

Read the Subway sandwich artist job description to find out more about the primary position available at Subway restaurants.

History
Subway began as a partnership between 17 year old Fred DeLuca and family friend and physicist Dr. Peter Buck in 1965. The pair opened the original location in Bridgeport, CT, with only $1,000. By 1974, 16 locations operated throughout Connecticut. DeLuca and Buck began franchising the business in 1974. Subway now operates the largest submarine sandwich shop business in the world. DeLuca still serves as president of the company. Subway operates as a division of Doctor’s Associates, a company created by DeLuca and Buck to oversee corporate operations.
Menu
Subway offers a host of signature subs and classic favorites, like the Chicken & Bacon Ranch or Spicy Italian sandwiches. Subway also offers many subs as lighter fare salads. Subway stores bake bread each day and carry fresh ingredients, including jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, spinach, and a variety of other sandwich toppers. Subway even provides a host of breakfast sandwiches, such as the Double Bacon, Egg & Cheese sandwich and the Sunrise Subway Melt.
Community Involvement
Many Subway restaurants operate as independently owned and operated franchise locations. Because of franchising, many local Subway restaurants work to help the communities supporting the eateries. Chicago franchiser Tim Ryan recently donated 600 sandwiches to The 180 Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers Homecoming Event. Texas owner Philip Peek recently assisted the Pleasant Grove Independent School District in Texarkana and provided the first week of lunches to students when the school district could not serve lunch. Subway owners often give back to the communities in which they live and work. Subway even provides an online resource allowing charitable and for-profit organizations to request corporate donations or sponsorships.
Environmental
Subway seeks to utilize the most current sustainable practices in its distribution and packaging operations and also operates Subway Eco-Stores. Eco-Stores use high efficiency HVAC systems, efficient lighting systems, day lighting, LED interior and exterior signs, and several other systems designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council criteria for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The first Subway Eco-Store opened in Kissimmee, FL, in 2007. Subway also uses only 100% hormone free milk and readily biodegradable cleaners as well as napkins, menus, and packaging material made with recycled goods.
International
Subway maintains a mammoth international presence and oversees stores in more than 95 countries. Canada, Australia, and the U.K. contain the largest bulk of restaurants outside the U.S., with each country maintaining more than 1,000 locations each. Subway fast food restaurants show up in smaller numbers in countries, like the Netherlands, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and the Czech Republic. Subway operates or franchises more than 10,000 restaurants outside of the U.S.
Financial
Subway exists as a privately owned company. Doctor’s Associates Inc. owns and operates the Subway business empire. Doctor’s Associates runs under the watchful eye of Subway founder Fred DeLuca. DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck started Doctor’s Associates in 1966 to control the Subway business. Both Subway and Doctor’s Associates maintain headquarters in Milford, CT. Subway posts yearly revenues near $15 billion. Subway restaurants number more than 34,000 and operate in over 95 countries worldwide.

Cameron Near:
You have to be 16 or older. If you are younger it is only under special terms. (not likely – sorry)
The starting pay for a Clerk is $7.30 (minimum wage) and your hours are based on weekly schedule starting Tuesdays.
The employees use RO (request off) sheets to determine much of the schedule and who will be working, but it is flexible more or less.
Sarah:
Subways are mostly individually owned so it varies from location to location. However this means that they are MORE likely to hire 14/15. Just keep in mind that even if they can hire you, if someone older has more experience (veeeery likely) and has applied then youre out of luck. Still, resubmit applications often and be friendly to any employee you see, it scores you points if someone says ‘this sweet little girl/boy dropped this off’ versus ‘here, another app’, which might be the extra umph you need. and a no one week could be a yes the next, but they wont consider you if you dont have a RECENT application. good luck!! =)
Iceman:
Lowest age you can be is 16. I’ve had high school kids come in and work at the restaurant I was dealing with for a while. It’s cool for everyone because they are an extra set of helping hands and they don’t suck down hours like most adults [including myself do. I typically follow a strict “never work in a food facility” cause but Subway was actually pretty pimp. We had tips, fresh food and nothing was ever difficult. I think the working situation depended on the crew you were working with–you could either have a really good or really bad time depending on the traffic the store received, too. I worked in a major city across the street from a gym so the majority of the customers were all /fit/ or looking to get /fit/. The traffic only ever declined between the hours of 4:00 and 7:00. We were in a constant state of having to make more bread or re-stock the foodstuffs. Not every Subway is going to keep you in a constant frenzy and make you dread coming in the next day to relive the process all over again but be mindful of where you apply. Also, you gotta say “Welcome to Subway” for every customer coming in. That gets real old real fast.

To everyone:
If you post on this website saying you need a job, it’s not going to get to any subway managers.
Go to subway.com and fill out an application with the locations you would like to work at.
Most States require that you are atleast 15, however, most places won’t hire you until you’re 16 or 18. Just go in and ask, they won’t mind.
You begin at minimum wage, most of the time. ($7.35/hr where I live) however, many places may start you at $8 an hour.
Jassie:
Labor laws vary by state. Hourly pay varies by experience. No experience usually equals minimum pay, which also varies by state.
Julian:
You need to be sixteen to work at Subway. I was sixteen when i applied and i was called back. I got the job and worked there for 2 years until i was fired for not getting three receipts signed. Be careful with that!
Steph:
To those that were asking about age; I heard that Subway hires at either 13 or 14 in some parts of Canada. I’m pretty sure it’s 14. I think all you need is proof you are you (SIN number, birth certificate, etc) and that’s it in terms of working permits/papers. If you are a Canadian citizen, you shouldn’t need anything more. I don’t know about dual citizenship or immigration though.
Heather:
hi, i just turned 16 and i would like to work at subway. does anyone know if i need working permits/papers? i was told once you turn 16 you no longer need any working papers or a work permit. is that true or false?
thank you for your time.

Waldo:
If you keep asking about age, then you shouldn’t apply because subway needs competent people that can read. By reading I mean reading what was written before. They mentioned age requirments numerous times.
