History / Background Information:

The first Target was opened in 1962 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The original logo for the retailer had the name going through a bull’s eye. The bull’s eye became the logo because the founders of the company, the Dayton Company did not want its new discount store to be confused with other department stores it was operating.

Today the Target Corporation operates over 1500 stores in all 50 states and overseas as well. There are well over 391,000 employees working in these stores. Target stores are also famous for its pit bull dog mascot with a black bull’s eye surrounding one eye. This dog logo is featured in the company’s advertising and on placards throughout its stores. There is also a discount section in the front of each Target store called the Red Spot where items can be had for as little as one dollar.

Target is the second largest retailer in the world, second only to Wal-Mart.
