History
Walgreens began as a single location pharmacy in 1901. Founder Charles R. Walgreen opened his first location in a 50 by 20 foot storefront in Chicago, IL. Walgreen increased his business with a successful delivery program. He repeated customer telephone orders and names loudly and clearly so his shop assistant could gather the goods and deliver them to nearby doorsteps quickly. Walgreens then engaged customers and asked after sick family members. Nearby patrons often received ordered goods before ending telephone conversations with the pharmacist. By 1913, Walgreens operated in four separate locations. In 1919, Walgreen opened his 20th store. The 1,000th Walgreens location opened in 1984; at that time, the company operated under the grandson of Charles Walgreen, Charles R. Walgreen III. Today, Walgreens exists as a public company and operates over 8,000 company-owned stores across the U.S. and in Puerto Rico.
