A YMCA fitness center attendant performs a multitude of job duties. Primary responsibilities include providing guest service and basic facility maintenance. Guest service duties include greeting guests, providing assistance with center equipment, offering health and wellness advice, and enforcing fitness center rules. Operational duties include maintaining a clean and organized fitness center and performing minor repairs to equipment as necessary.

Are There Any Additional Duties?

Depending on the shift, fitness center attendants may need to assist team members with opening or closing procedures. Some YMCA locations may require attendants to possess CPR and first aid certification. Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
YMCA Service Desk Associate: For the job title, would you say, was the service desk and basically I would just sign people in. You know how have the Y cards and you just give them to them and they scan it. Just make sure they’re a member and all that. Basically the same, just like what the Rec does. When you first walk in, it’s basically the same exact thing, just service desk and get them equipment if they need it. Just stuff like that.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
YMCA Service Desk Associate: It was really good. We were all really good friends, Because it’s mostly people from our high school just worked there together since we was like, “Yo, let’s all just do this together.” So it was all friends and then, so it was just a good environment because of that. Because we all knew each other, just joked around. Especially when it was slow, just joked around and stuff like that.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
YMCA Service Desk Associate: Me, I’m like a personal person. I love to meet people and talk to them. So just seeing all the different people that came in and walked in, getting to know them. You start to pick up on regulars, so you could make jokes with them when they walk in. Like there was one guy Dave, he was really old but he still had his workout bag. I was like, “What you doing today?” [inaudible] chest out, he was like, “You know it’s the normal.” And I was like, “Okay.” And it was just the little jokes like that.

Interviewer: Please describe the application and interview process.
YMCA Service Desk Associate: Yeah, it wasn’t really that bad. It’s just a typical application and then they asked you are you CPR certified and stuff like that. And if you aren’t they help you get that certification that you need for the job.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
YMCA Service Desk Associate: Your typical interview questions, like how can you benefit the team and stuff like that. And they ask you a little bit of fitness questions. Because you have to know, since you’re at the Y, you should know some general fitness knowledge and especially depending on what branch you are. Like there’s service desks for when you first walk in and then there’s some near the weight rooms and the child place area. So depending on where you go, they ask different questions on that. Like I was in the main one so I just got the general questions. Like what would you do in this instance and stuff like that. What if a patron came up to you for guest passes and what if their membership was expired or something like that when they tried to come in.

Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
YMCA Service Desk Associate: It didn’t take that long. Probably took a couple of weeks or so, two weeks or so. And I gave them my number so they just called me on the phone and let me know

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
YMCA Service Desk Associate: For me, I would say just because I am a sociable person so having that factor of wanting to meet people and being friendly and stuff like that. That helped along with the fact my resume was really good. I was involved a lot in high school so it was like, showed me I can, time management was good and I could devote myself to many different things and still get all my tasks done that I needed to.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
YMCA Service Desk Associate: As long as you go in with an open mind and you actually want to do it, you should be fine. But if not, it’s probably not the best place for you. Just because it’s a service desk so you’re not going to do as much as you would … If you don’t like just sitting there for x amount of, however many hours you have to work, you probably wouldn’t like to do it. But if you’re a social person, you like to meet people and you can make fun out of sitting at the desk, you should be fine. But if not, then probably not the best for you.

YMCA Fitness Center Attendant: It’s a pretty nice environment. I like to lift a lot and talk to people that like to do the things I like to do: lift and work out.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
YMCA Fitness Center Attendant: Probably that I get a free membership there, so I don’t have to pay to go lift. And after work, I can just lift after I’m done working. So, it’s pretty nice.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
YMCA Fitness Center Attendant: Go into the computer system, sign in, go into the weight room, take the towels and go wash them, make sure the weights are put back in the right place, and answer any questions anybody has.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
YMCA Fitness Center Attendant: I actually knew the manager there. I knew their son, so they helped me get in. So, I didn’t really have to have an interview.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
YMCA Fitness Center Attendant: My past work experiences. Basically, how I am. Am I in college? Am I available? Stuff like that. What am I good at, do I know how to use a computer, and have I dealt with people before – those kinds of things.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
YMCA Fitness Center Attendant: Probably that I’m good working with people and I lift a lot, and I know what I’m doing. So, when they put me in the weight room, I could answer questions people had.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
YMCA Fitness Center Attendant: I would tell them go for it. It’s a good work environment. The people are friendly. It’s definitely worth putting on your resume and shows that you’re fit, you like to work out, you’re ready for a challenge.

YMCA Recreation Assistant: I’m a recreation assistant. Basically, I watch the kid as they play, help get things – maybe balls, nets, anything they need. I put up the nets when the basketball hoops are looking tampered, clean the floors, basically anything they need me to do. So as far as that, that’s about it for my job title.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
YMCA Recreation Assistant: It’s real fast-paced. There’s a lot you have to worry about. You have to worry about the kids, you got to worry about where they are, what they’re doing, tell them to stop, and there’s just a whole lot you have to do. It’s a real fast-paced environment, though.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
YMCA Recreation Assistant: My favorite part and my least favorite part is the kids because they’re funny, but at the same time, they could be crazy. But, I get connections with some of the kids, and they’re pretty funny.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
YMCA Recreation Assistant: Basically, get there, they eat a little snack, then take them out for free time or little activities. It might be crafts day, it might be time for them to play, or sometimes we take the older kids to the little computer lab that we have. So, it’s a pretty nice day. It might be different depending on what day it is.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
YMCA Recreation Assistant: Well, me, I was referred by somebody, but the application process is pretty easy, though. You can either do it online or you can have an application from there. It’s pretty easy, though. You just fill out, and they get back to you.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
YMCA Recreation Assistant: Basically, they asked me a lot of questions about my background, as far as my patience with kids and as far as criminal activity. They’re really on the kids thing; they don’t play around. So, that’s really one of the main things that they ask you throughout the process before you get hired in. They want to know everything.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
YMCA Recreation Assistant: Be prepared. If you can’t work in a fast-paced environment with kids, then don’t do it. You have to be patient. You have to be able to put in a lot of time and a lot of effort. That would be a couple of things right there.
