History
YMCA, or Young Men’s Christian Association, began in London, England, in 1844. Founded by George Williams, a local department store worker, YMCA stood as a haven for youths seeking refuge from life on the streets. In 1851, the first U.S. YMCA opened in Boston, Massachusetts. YMCA grew throughout the 1800s and continued to thrive and form new chapters. Over the course of the next several decades, YMCA inspired millions of youths and organized thousands of events to promote Christian values and active lifestyles. In the late-1990s, YMCA engaged corporate sponsorship for programs and events created by the non-profit youth organization. YMCA operates roughly 2,600 non-profit chapters throughout the United States.
