How to Get a Job at ALDI

ALDI phone interviews generally last no more than a few minutes. The average length of time it takes to complete ALDI in-person interviews ranges from about 45 minutes to an hour for group interviews and roughly 30 minutes for 1:1 job interviews.

Final Interviews
The entire hiring process may last as long as four weeks. The final interview session may serve as negotiation for salary or hourly pay. Workers may also receive job offers during the final interview or simply await a call after ALDI determines hiring status a few days later.

Initial Stages of the ALDI Hiring Process

The ALDI hiring process takes some time to complete. On average, applicants spend roughly two weeks filling out hiring forms and attending job interviews for ALDI employment consideration. The nationwide grocery store chain often implements three stages of hiring, including multiple interviews with district managers and department directors. The interview process may start off with a recruitment call or workers may simply receive invitations to begin face-to-face interviews with ALDI hiring personnel.

Types of In-Person Interviews

Following the initial stages of the ALDI hiring process, applicants move on to the actual in-person sessions to determine eligibility for employment. The grocer may conduct interviews in group or 1 to 1 settings.

Group Interviews
Group interviews may feature multiple managers on interviewing panels. Candidates interview with up to 10 to 15 other applicants in somewhat lengthy sessions designed to gauge abilities to interact with others in public settings. In contrast, the one-on-one hiring sessions screen for more professional, work-related traits.

As an Entry-Level Applicant…

Aspiring entry-level ALDI employees may only need to participate in a single job interview, depending on previous experience. Some locations look for entry-level job seekers with past histories in the grocery store industry or retail industry and hire accordingly. Job opportunities like cashier or grocery clerk sometimes take only a week to interview for and feature at most one or two hiring sessions, in total.

What Types of Interview Questions Will I Be Asked?

Applicants typically only respond to very basic and general interview questions due to the informal nature entry-level ALDI interviews sometimes feature. Common entry-level interview questions may include:

  • Why do you want to work for ALDI?
  • “Have you ever worked at a supermarket before?”
  • Do you have any questions for us before we conclude the session?
  • Asking questions about operations and specific job duties as well as company culture often shows added interest in the job and may encourage a more favorable hiring determination. More specific entry-level interview questions may cover topics such as:

    • “What specific responsibility do you think will prove hardest for you?”
    • Why do you think you deserve the position?
    • “Say you have stock to put out, a spill to clean up, and a customer asks you a question: how do you go about addressing all of these issues?”

    Interview Questions for Managers

    More specific interview questions featured during the ALDI hiring process cover education history, personal interest, and scenarios based on retail and grocery store work environments. Managerial hopefuls may respond to interview questions like: How would you describe your managerial style? and Where do you see yourself with ALDI in the next five to 10 years?

    Act Professional and Speak Candidly

    What Should You Wear?
    Wearing formal attire proves necessary for most ALDI positions during the hiring process. The grocery store promotes professionalism in the workplace and insists employees wear presentable clothing and maintain similar appearances at all times.

    Strong Communication Skills
    Grocery store associates interact with customers regularly and should demonstrate strong communication skills during both group interviews and one-to-one interviews. Speak freely and on subject. Remember to express gratitude for the opportunity to interview for available jobs. Showing self-motivated attributes and willingness to work irregular hours early on also sets candidates apart from other workers during the interview process.

    Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
    ALDI Employee: Stock was my basic duty, but if I wasn’t having nothing to stock, I had to find something to do, like push a broom, go outside and get the carts, help people take their bags out to the car.

    Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
    ALDI Employee: I got along with everybody. The only thing I did was just did my job. And the people were great, so I had no complaints. I left there because I started going to college. It was a good environment for me. I liked it. It gave me a lot of work experience around older people. It was great.

    Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
    ALDI Employee: I liked what I was doing. I wasn’t trying… it was an easy job to me. I was young, so I just did what I had to do and got paid for it.

    Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
    ALDI Employee: I would get there right when they opened up. I would go and take the trash out, then I would tear boxes down, break boxes down. Then after that, whatever needed stocked on the shelves, I would do that. And basically once I got done with that, it was freelance. Go outside and pick up paper in the parking lot, get the carts and put them in the right places. That’s about it.

    Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
    ALDI Employee: It was a basic application: name, address, hours, work experience. I sent it in, and they called me two days later. I came in, talked to them. They said they’d give me a call. They called me like three hours later to tell me I could start the next day. He asked me what day I could start. I said I could start tomorrow, and I was there.

    Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
    ALDI Employee: “Do you want to work?” Yes, I did. It was a simple application process. Also, don’t get caught taking nothing. If you see somebody taking something, report it to the manager. Stuff like that. But it’s just a simple, basic process.

    Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
    ALDI Employee: Just be yourself, do you job, be patient, and be courteous.

      Why is it that Aldi only accepts applications at their job fairs? I work part time for minimum wage and no benefits and trying to support my husband who was laid off almost 2 years ago. Aldi doesn’t pay much but it’s more than I make now, and they offer health insurance which we don’t have since my husband got laid off. I can’t seem to get time off to attend the hiring events and my applications won’t be considered at any other time. What can I do?

      Well, Aldi is a very competive job to get. I went to the job fair once and didn’t even get a call back. That was back in 2008. Now 2011, I got expereince from working with Crowne Plaza as a Front Desk Agent. Few days ago, I’ve attended a job fair on March 08th, 2011 in MN. They told me that they called me by friday if they want an interview. Today is Wednesday, March 09th, 2011; the following day, They called me for an 1 on 1 Interview. Hopefully, I can Ace the interview since I know there are other strong candidates too. I’m nervous but at least they give me an opportunity to sales myself such as (personality, work expereince and education) to them. Once I’ve complete the interview, I’ll write more. Lol.

      I put an Application on May 3rd here in Florida and heard nothing. How long till they start hiring usually???? Maybe its because I never ran a cash register before and I`m in my fifties they will not hire me. They are opening in June 2011.

      How long does it take to hear anything though?

      I had just found out about this side and it might be to late for me to get an answer from you since my interview as a shift manager is tomorrow, I am pretty nervous due to the fact that i don’t know what type of questions they are going to ask for a shift manager position , i normally freeze at interviews, I would greatly appreciate it if i could find out what questions they might ask . I have seen the common questions on here which some of them might be asked, i guess i am just a nervous wreck lol, even if you don’t have any specific questions for a shift manager interview just wish me luck Thank you

      I had interviews in 2012 with aldi UK, started out with me handing in my cv at a local store, I then got a phone call 3 days later from the area manager and had a short 5min phone interview. She asked me if I was still looking for employment, what I do in my spare time (hobbies etc) and what days and how flexible I am with my hours. She then told me to come to a 1to1 interview at my local store 4 days later. When I arrived 10mins early she hadn’t arrived yet so was asked to browse the store. 10 mins later she and another man introduced themselves to me and took me into the store office. She gave a short speech as to who she was and also the man gave the same (he had just recently been employed by aldi and was following the area manager for training) I then had to give a short speech about myself, hobbies etc. Then the questions started. I was asked things like What are your strengths, What I knew about aldi stored, What was different about aldi to other retail stores, What I noticed was different to aldi staff than another staff. I was also asked if I had any weaknesses, I replied that I didn’t think I had any as I always put 110% in everything I do. Also was asked when the worst time I let a customer down. I again replied I’ve never let a customer down. Questions like these are sort of trick questions. Don’t answer with anything negative with any question given. When the interview was over she explained the next process would be a 2hour walk around and shift with the store manager to see if our personalities fit and If I could cope with the pace, and physical side of the job. Hope I get it ๐Ÿ™‚

      Some of my house hold groceries I buy from ALDI regularly. It is a good, gentle, well organized store. It’s location is also good. It’s products are extraordinary, always fresh & quality.       I have just had an interview with Aldi after applying for an Assistant Store Manager position in the midlands, UK. I have to say it was one of the most disappointing and rushed interviews I have ever had in my life. The whole thing was done and dusted within around 5 minutes. No reference was made towards my past work history, and they seemed to care very little about the experience I already had as a team leader. Then they kept telling me that I would have to start as a Store Assistant (they prefered to promote from within), and work my way up. My response to this was, why advertised externally on your website for this position? I felt cheated and under valued to be honest. I gave as good as I got, stated the position I was interested in, and then was ushered out the door. It felt like all they were doing was recruiting bodies for the shop floor, and not interested at all in outside people with experience.

      Massive let down….

      I went to an Aldi Hiring Event that was advertised in the newspaper. At the Hiring Event, my application was taken along with my application and cover letter. A few hours later, I received a call from a member of the Aldi Hiring Team that they would like to interview the following morning. The following morning, I had the interview that asked basic interview questions, dates/wages/duties of my previous jobs, and whether I had anything on my background screening that should be noted prior to it being run (Be truly honest about this because if you lie you will immediately be rejected for employment). After this interview, I was called 20 minutes later and scheduled for a second interview that same afternoon. That is in one more hour! I will be sure to come back and update this to let you know how the process goes. Thank you!

      As I advised earlier in my previous comment, I’m returning to this site to provide an update regarding my Aldi Application and Interview process. The second round interview involved a member of the Aldi Hiring Team and an Aldi Manager that described the duties and requirements of the position. During this round, I was questioned about my previous work experience again, asked to specifically describe my duties and responsibilities at my previous employer, and asked to describe my most physically demanding job since at Aldi you will unload a truck in the morning, stock the products, then cashier for incoming customers. After the second round interview, I was given a New Hire Packet and sent to another member of the Aldi Hiring Team to fill out a release form for a background check and fill out a form with my shirt and jacket size in the event I would be hired. Even though I was given the New Hire Packet, I was told after that same interview by the Aldi Hiring Team Member, that if my background check was acceptable and no other applicants provided more optimal feedback than myself I would then be contacted by phone the next day for the job offer. Thankfully, I did receive that call the next day! I was offered the position, advised to complete a drug screening at my nearest Quest Diagnostic, and then given the date of my orientation along with time and location and given my start date for employment. I was advised again along with my job offer that the background check still had not been completed and that my offer would still be dependent on the results of my background check. I’ve completed the drug screening (which I know is drug free:) and now have completed the entire hiring process with Aldi. I hope my comments and experience have shed a little more light on what one should expect when applying to Aldi! Best wishes to any and all on your employment seeking endeavors! Thank you!

        Can I ask where you are located and when was your hire date? (Month and year). I have just gone three interviews with aldi and got hired assuming my background check comes back good. That was one week ago and I haven’t heard anything. On pins and needles!!

        I also went through the same process. Group interview, 1 on 1 interview and a 2nd interview all in the same day in less than 2 hours. I was told that I would receive a call back after 5 days from the store manager and its been 12 days so far. According to what I’ve been told by one of the shift managers at the store, it could take up to 3 weeks. Still awaiting the call in hopes that I am offered the job. The process just seems longer than I expected. But all in all, i’m thankful that I was offered both interviews. Praying for the best to everyone who is applying. Never give up hope. I’m sure that it will all be worth it.

      Hi. I work at an ALDI in Clarion and I just wanted to let everybody applying for the job know some things. The first is, if you are applying, the positions (IN STORE) are cashier, shift manager, store manager, and district manager. There are no stocker position, no stock clerks, nothing special, as the cashier will have to do all of this. This is vital for the job and pay. Don’t expect to have this job for a “go to work, go home, get paid” kind of job. You have to love what you do. This job is a passion. You love your team, you love your job, and you work hard.
