Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Cook: Okay, I’m a lead cook, and what I do, I cook a lot of food, and I’m over the ordering of the food and all that. I have to make sure the food go out on time and stuff like that.

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Cook: They asked me how long … how much experience I had. I have over 20 years experience, but we also train … If you ain’t got no experience, we will train you.

Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Cook: Well, at the end of my interview, they notified me that I had the job, to come right back.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Cook: Just put in the application, and it’s real easy, and it’s fun to work at Beef O’Brady’s, so just put in the application, and come on in.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Hostess: Well, I’m a host, hostess. I basically greet the guests that come in. I seat them wherever they need to be seated, depending on the section of who’s serving. I bus the tables, wipe them down. I spot sweep the dining area. That’s pretty much it. I roll silverware. I help out the servers if they need help.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Hostess: It’s pretty relaxed. It’s a sports bar so sometimes people come in and just sit themselves or move tables. It’s just part of the atmosphere. You wouldn’t see that at a five-star restaurant but because it’s a sports bar, it’s okay. We have our moments where it’s really slow but then people get out of class at a certain time so then it’s a big rush of people coming in.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Hostess: Well, I would come, let’s say it’s the opening shift. I would come in, set out my little station, put out menus. Make sure there’s enough silverware rolled. I’ll check to see who’s the server on staff and I’ll assign sections. There’s like a little board on the podium for the host stand. All the servers, I’ll write down all the information for the servers so if I’m not available, they can see what tables they have. I mean, that’s pretty much it. The entire time, I’m just greeting, seating, cleaning up and then I leave. When the next host comes in, I just ask her what she needs or him and then leave.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Hostess: Well, I applied online. You have the option of applying in person or online. They called me I believe within two weeks. I was interviewed right there at the restaurant. They ask you the basic questions, your experience, what are your weaknesses and strengths, what are you like. After that, I mean, it took two weeks to get everything going, the background check and all that. Then I started within two weeks of getting the interview.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Hostess: Definitely your experience. They ask you what are you strengths and your weaknesses. They ask you stuff like what would you do in a certain situation. I don’t know. That’s pretty much it.

Interviewer: What should an applicant wear to the interview?
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Hostess: I would wear slacks, dress shoes. I’m not a heel person so I wouldn’t wear heels. I would wear a nice shirt. If it’s sleeveless, I’ll wear a cardigan on top. I have a purse. I usually don’t carry them but for interviews I do. I mean, you can bring a resume if you want to but for entry level positions, it’s really not necessary.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Hostess: Don’t be intimated. Hosting is not tough. If you want to get into the restaurant business, hosting is a way to get in. Now, I’m starting to move into serving. Yeah, if you want to be a server, that’s the way to go, host.
