Blockbuster Customer Service Representative Interview Video

Video Transcript

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Blockbuster CSR: I was a CSR, which stands for customer service representative, so my main job duties were to help people rent movies and check out at the cash register, and to help them find movies that they were looking for, whether that be, “I’m looking for this title, where is it located in the store?”, because there was a huge collection there, or it’s, “I need a movie for my 10-year-old granddaughter. What do you recommend?” Then, you would be the one in charge of finding a good recommendation for them.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Blockbuster CSR: The work environment was really casual, which was nice. It was pretty good with scheduling, which I really liked, and you would just sign in. Everyone was pretty friendly with each other. Everyone was friends, and we all hung out. Sometimes if the store wasn’t busy, you would just get to sit around, and you got to watch movies, so that you could provide a good review on them for people. It’s a really great job.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Blockbuster CSR: I would check in, and I’d drop my stuff off in the office, and then I’d go and I’d sign up on the computer, whichever one I was assigned to. As people would walk into the store, we were asked to greet them and say hi, and ask if we could help them find anything. If they said no, we would usually just stay behind the desk. If they’d say yes, we can look up what we need to find on our computer, or if we know where it is, we can just go on the floor and find it. Sometimes, they’d say, “Oh, I need a movie for my 10- year-old granddaughter. I don’t know what she likes. What do you recommend?” We would go to the Kids & Family section, and we’d go pick a movie we liked, that we had watched either on our own or in the store, and we’d recommend that to them. They would usually go and rent that title.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Blockbuster CSR: With Blockbuster, they did a casting call. It was kind of like a large group interview. I think 10 or 15 of us were there. You just show up to one of their stores that they have designated for this, and they give you questions and group activities to do. We did movie trivia, so if you’re a person that knows a lot about movies… I love trivia. They would ask us, “What actor was in this role in this film?” Then, we were given a task, a list of movies, and they said, “Okay, go find this movie in the store.” Whoever can find it quickly wins a candy bar. After that, they would pick the people who they felt were the biggest leaders, talkative, and open, and then we did a second interview where they would just ask questions about leadership, and openness, and your customer service skills, and your past job history.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Blockbuster CSR: They definitely want the CSR, and a new thing is that they were looking for people who had good selling skills, because they also sell Dish subscriptions in the store. A great thing about working for them is if you can sell a Dish subscription to someone, you get a $50 bonus. Even though it’s pertaining to retail, they would be like, “Oh, are you a persuasive person? Are you good at talking with people and showing them this side of things, to get them to buy the Dish subscription?” That was something that they wanted and they looked for.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Blockbuster CSR: I think one of the major things is that I dressed well. I didn’t overdress, but I wore a nice, casual dress and a blazer with it. Some of the other people there were just wearing ratty jeans and t-shirts. I think the first impression is so important. They saw that I had taken the time to put nicer clothes on, so they paid more attention to me. It wasn’t even necessarily that I was more qualified than the person wearing the messier clothes; it was that they noticed me, and that I stood out because I was dressed for that interview.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Blockbuster CSR: I would tell them that they should really work on being a good leader. That’s something that Blockbuster looks for because they look to promote their CSRs to managers. Because they only have one or two people in the store at a time, they look for a lot of leadership abilities, and they look for someone who is really open and talkative, because the checkout process is a bit long with Blockbuster, because you are renting with an account, so they’re looking for someone who has no problem talking to a customer, making chitchat, while you go through that long process. They look for people that are really strong and that are committed to the job. They don’t want someone who is going to back out on them because they don’t have that many people working in the store at a time. So if one person backs out, they’re left with nobody, or one person. That can be really rough on a Friday night. They’re definitely looking for people who are reliable and committed.

Blockbuster Sales Representative Interview Video

Video Transcript

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Blockbuster Sales Representative: At Blockbuster, I was a sales rep, sales associate, rental agent – various titles but basically all the same thing. You just greet customers, rent them a video, sign them up for memberships, help them find videos in the database, just anything that relates to renting videos.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Blockbuster Sales Representative: Actually, Blockbuster, it was very quiet. It’s not a high-paced, high-energy atmosphere. It was more laidback. At the same time, it still required you to be really friendly and helpful and polite to customers for the most part.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Blockbuster Sales Representative: That one was fairly simple. Basically, I filled out the app in store. This was quite a while back, so there was no online application at the time. I filled out the application in store, and I gave it directly to the on-site manager. There was a need for an associate, so I basically got an interview on the spot. That just went from there.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Blockbuster Sales Representative: They wanted to know if I had ever worked in a video store. The answer was no. They wanted to know if I can stand for long periods of time and if I had any knowledge of, I guess, current entertainment – movies, things of that nature – to be able to interact with the customers and suggest rentals, things of that nature. Other than that, just standard questions about work history.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?
Blockbuster Sales Representative: In that interview, I can honestly say that I think it was just… I interviewed well. I interview well. They asked me specific questions. I answered it. I showed interest in the job. For the most part, they understood that I was a student, and like all students, we need some extra cash. To be honest, it wasn’t super serious, but they just wanted to know who I was as a person and if I will fit their environment.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Blockbuster Sales Representative: Just basically be able to stand for a long time in a laidback environment. Usually at a Blockbuster store, there may be up to five associates on the clock at one time. There’s not a lot of things going on. I mean, it’s just really laidback. If you get bored easy, it honestly may not be the job for you.
